Follow one harvest from the field to the market and the arithmetic of loss becomes personal. A large share of what a family grows can be gone before it earns a shilling, lost to spoilage and weak market access.
The cost is never only food. It is school fees unpaid, a clinic visit postponed, and next season's inputs unbought. ALDO's livelihoods work exists to break that chain, household by household, in Aweil East and its neighbouring counties.
These are the stakes behind every figure in a proposal. Behind 500 households is 500 versions of the same impossible choice, made a little less impossible.
